The fast-developing field of machine learning promises to take over the tedious tasks of culling and editing photos so you can be behind the shutter button where you belong. I mean I would miss the VR and the 200mm FL (better than not even having the option, and the IQ isn't terrible, it's just not exactly sharp either, but it's also a travel zoom lens, and those are rarely sharp at both ends. The existing Nikon F mount 24-120 f4 has VR.Disappointing that this new Z mount does not! Leica introduces a tilt screen, USB-C and HDMI ports, 8K video and more to the Q-series. Save up and have both. Also I happen to like compositions of this nature, so they are fine by me. Maybe one or the other, but rarely on the long end especially. We're pleased to report that it improves on the already very good performance of our original sample; check out the results for yourself in our new gallery, shot with the Nikon Z7 and Z9. Who aren't 'locked' into a system, or even own a FF system. Through the link below you can read more about what this could mean for you as a photographer. The 24-120 is noticeably better though and there's no reason I should keep the 24-200 except for if I want to have the extra reach now and then or use it on my smaller body (Zfc), losing some on the wide end, but gaining some on the telephoto end. The range isn't too different. You wouldn't, and an early production copy isn't necessarily any better or worse than a later one. Sitting at the top of Nikon's Z-series full-frame mirrorless lineup, the Z7 II is Nikon's most advanced Z-series camera yet. Check out what he shot! I am sure at 120mm the additional lens VR would be nice.New lens has no VR but costs more money.I don't call that progress, I call that cheap. Strangely unimpressed with this gallery. The series begins one frame after the whale carcass and ends with the "hands off our home" mural. No I was speaking of the 24-105mm class of lenses in general. DPReview's Jason Hendardy took to the streets of Japan with this compact, Leica-made L-mount prime lens. The minivan or SUV of the lens world. The lower IQ performance is usually minimal so it's a great casual shooting lens that ends up giving me more good pics on a trip (the lens you have on you is better than the lens back at the trailhead). Works great for many shoots, including lifestyle-type stuff, events, etc. I don't think there is a single aperture and focal length combo on this lens that isn't excellent in image quality. In the US at least, You generally don't get a lot for the f/4 lens anyway, about $400-$450 on trade (depending on condition) and you'd be lucky to get $550 trying to sell it to a private party. Regardless, because of those 2 bad reviews, I'm completely unwilling to consider Panasonic as a system. But since the Canon is sharper into the corners than most 24-70/2.8s all you are doing is giving up 1 stop for 1/2 the weight saving, 35mm more range, smaller filters, 1/3 smaller volume and save $1200+ (which could put towards a lens thats actually fast and even sharper when you need that). It isn't until I've got the pot's flower filling my screen that i can start to notice a little bit more detail/resolution on the 24-200. As an owner of the 24-200, it's not that much of an improvement (to my eye) in sharpness between the two. It makes the nicer sunstars of the two and is the better for 70-120. . So that's an easy one because it IS more of an apples to apples comparison and easier to make the comparisons. But I would like to upgrade the 24-200 aperture and IQ a bit; I think the 24-120 is going to be killer for my needs now. A big like from me. Don't worry, I make mistakes in my third language too. @Barney (or anyone at DPR really), how about a comprehensive shoot out between the Nikon Z24-120/4, Canon RF24-105/4, Panasonic 24-105/4 and the Sony FE24-105/4. In this buying guide weve rounded up all the current interchangeable lens cameras costing around $2000 and recommended the best. Edit: My bad, I had 100mm stuck in my head Yeah 120/4 would yield more (comparable to 85/2.8). If I was still committed to the Nikon Z system I would order it in a heartbeat. I don't really think Nikon can allow or dis-allow Sigma to make a Z mount lens. Nikon's new Z 24-120mm F4 S is a standard zoom lens for the full-frame mirrorless Z mount, intended to offer a more versatile and cheaper alternative to the high-end Z 24-70mm F2.8 S. Providing decent medium telephoto reach, good close focusing capabilities and a lighter, more portable form factor, the Z 24-120mm F4 S should make an ideal carry-everywhere zoom for Z6 and Z7-series shooters. Thankfully i kept my f4 version, so i just rolled back into that. It's so good I sold my much-loved 24-200 Z. Id have to buy the 24-120/4 brand new, which is $1700 tax-in. Wanna go wide? Also, how is the edge performance, Maybe the Nikon is sharper at the long end but the edges are horrid in comparison to the others, without a side by side test, we don't really know - also where do all the lenses start to drop off in terms of IQ? The 24-120mm zoom lens has a long history with Nikon . Don't sell. Well Done. With 14-30 and 100-400, one has it all covered. It will act as a wide-angle for full-frame cameras or as 45mm equivalent normal lens on APS-C bodies. And, finally, they have caught up with sota ML technology with the Z9. @Simonella OK wasn't sure if you some how got it used or something for $1500. Indeed. Should be a nice travel lens. SLRgear Review November 15, 2010 by Andrew Alexander. Nikon's recent 400mm F4.5 lens for its Z mirrorless system is an appealing new option. I had a lot of lenses in the Sony camp as well, but i didnt need a lot of them. Ok but in a test we could take this for a lens that was not very resistant to backlighting. We had a few days to test it out click through to watch our initial thoughts. Looks mostly very sharp lens to me. Yes an no. First answer this, if it doesn't matter then why did Chris and Jordan of DPR, do a review of 4 $2000+ 70-200/2.8 lenses recently? Each image was recorded in RAW and converted with Lightroom 4.1 at Adobe Standard settings. Sony's f4s are a scattershot of different model lines, different generations, different feature sets, etc. After all, Nikon is supposed to be competitive with Sony and Canon? My Z 20/1.8 gets used from time to time when 24mm is not wide enough or for astro photography. Only had mine a week so early days but so far Im absolutely blown away by this lens, seems really sharp all over the frame and at all focal lengths, and great bokeh. Lenses and Sensors have come such a long way. Collect stamps instead, it is a cheaper hobby. @EXkurogane I have a 24-120/F4G that I picked up used this year for my Z6ii (and also my F100). My Z 50/1.8 is gathering dust but it is reassuring to own this optically almost perfect prime when opportunities occur. It's not nearly the same budget as a FZ82, but you have almost best of both worlds. I sold my 24-70 f/4 for the 2.8 and now wish I had just kept the f/4 as a light travel/backup lens. I will GLADLY sacrifice 1 stop on the long side of this range for these boons. This causes slight flickering of exposure in video. Ramon, so many people were panicking and saying Nikon was doomed. I will keep the 80-200 2.8d as a weapon! So I carry another body + lens, but it can be heavy. We've been taking a look at what it offers and what it's like to shoot with. Family moments are precious and sometimes you want to capture that time spent with loved ones or friends in better quality than your phone can manage. The latest Leica Q camera ups the megapixels but retains Leica's legendary colors. :) So are you suggesting I shoot the 24-120 in crop mode on the Z7 II at 120mm (which is like 180mm at that point) and then shoot the 24-200 in FX mode at 180mm? I'm sorry you had to suffer through viewing them. Frankly, having had a 24-120 and now a 24-105, I dont think the difference is really significant. These capable cameras should be solid and well-built, have both the speed and focus to capture fast action and offer professional-level image quality. Indushekharan. I really wish we could have a 100-300mm/4 instead of a 100-400mm with variable aperture. That way we could have an f/4 trinity covering 14mm to 300mm. The Fuji 16-80 covers the exact same range with the exact same aperture so it's the closest it can get. And since every person in the world already has their FF gear with $23,000 in lenses gee, your right, what point is there is doing comparisons. For this lens, Nikon used its Nano Crystal Coat to reduce or eliminate internal reflections . Color consistency has been absolutely remarkable btwn S lenses so far. Im kind of in the same camp. By Spencer Cox 32 Comments . My take away after shooting this for 2 days, comparing to the 24-70/2.8, AF a bit quicker, image quality straight out of camera a bit softer across the board, easy to correct in post. Give me some vignetting too, while you're at it. I wanted to like the Panasonic 24-105, I just can't seem to find a reason to. Beyond my preference for the E mount primes, Tamron's zooms & Sony's AF were what made me go E mount last year but I'd probably own a couple more zooms & a couple less primes if I'd gone Z mount. I've just received an email from Park Cameras stating that mine is being despatched today. Leica has announced a mono-only version of its M11 60MP manual focus rangefinder. I just liked the effect. Comparisons within brands may make more sense, but have less of an audience (like comparing a EF 24-105/f4 to a 24-105/f4 R mount). I bet most people here would welcome that. See the notes in the album description also. We've spent the past few months shooting with a new copy of the Z 24-120mm F4 S, taking it up and down the west coast of the USA as well as on a short trip to Berlin earlier this summer. That Fuji 16-80 is hardly the only FL equivalent, there's several 12-60 for M4/3, but yeah I think they're all pretty irrelevant unless they're f2.8 or better. Ideal reach and good balance/comprise regarding F4. Thanks! z 70-200 2.8 is too $$ for me right now. It should be a popular choice. In the first image, is that lens wet or is it just crazy flare? Wide enough for big canyons, but as much zoom as possible for passing wildlife. I tend to get a lot of mileage out of that range (80-120mm) for landscapes. I wonder if we will see similar designs from others, or maybe a L-Z autofocus adapter (after all, theres 4mm to work with, twice as much as what was available for E-Z adapters). The Z 24-120/4 on the other hand is pretty much on par with the 24-70. The Nikon Z8 is a $4000 Stacked-CMOS full-frame mirrorless camera that offers most of the capabilities of the range-topping Z9 but in a smaller, less expensive body. But I do remember being very impressed by the 24-200mm too. Changing of the guard. Hadn't noticed it, but generally that is caused by the pulsation of LED lights, either on the car itself, or a reflection of LED light sources in the vicinity. I could care less about corner softness. Digital Camera World Verdict. Canon and Sony Don't have a 24-120 and while you may feel this doesn't matter it sort of does. Why? @sirhawkeye i didnt get it for $1500, thats just the most its worth in my mind where Id keep it if i got it for that price. My biggest complaint about the 24-200 is just how quickly the aperture stops down. AbrasiveReducer "Nobody makes a good 24-105" is a very curious statement. Now I'm willing to concede that it's possible that it was the first batch of lenses or they got copies that had issues. The 24-70 f4 lens is very good quality, but it doesnt have the versatility of the other two lenses. And frankly, I'm not worried about the long end as much, I know how the Canon performs. Thanks to the Stacked CMOS sensor, the ZV-1 Mark II is capable of capturing 4K video at up to 30fps and 1080p video up to 120fps. Share More sharing options. The Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 S is a 5x zoom covering a wide-angle to moderate telephoto range. At least to me that is much more important than VR in the lens since IBIS isn't that bad. But I feel In reality, for MOST people, these comparisons have little influence on their decisions and it's not like someone is going to trade-in their NIkon gear and get a Sony or Canon because the RF 24-105 is sharper than the 24-120 Z or vice-versa. I chose the Troy sign and the dispensary. I trialed out the Z5 and was disappointed. Hopefully they come out with some good bodied soon. The R100 is Canon's smallest and lightest EOS R camera, aimed at entry level users to bring those seeking hybrid functions into the RF lens mount. I'm just going to sell the 24-70 and 24-200 and combine them into the new lens. I guess you could scale up FZ82s lens design to cover full frame, but at almost 6x larger dimensions (including diameter) it wouldnt really be practical. I had the old 24-120 which was known for variable quality to put it mildly. ), and I like how they're selectively towing that line vs the cheaper RF stuff by Canon (no sealing, no hood, slower/external AF, weird f11s, etc.). It seems 24-70 is doable, maybe even 28-105. Tested against my 24-200 and it is better. Yes the 24-70 f/4 is a great value and compact. I think there's some differences on the starry cloth due to that. Because this kind of zoom going wider than 24mm just has too many compromises to be good in the whole range. Just got my 24-120 and been testing it out against my 24-200, the difference is quite startling, it's surprisingly good wide open at 24 right to the edges, much ahead of the 24-200.Did a few shots on my brick garage wall and I would say it even betters the Z 24-70 F4 at all apertures and it was a lovely sharp lens.My son has the Nikon D850 with the F-mount equivalent of the 24-120 and it is like a bottle end in comparison, especially on the edges, Nikon has a winner here. I might go back and see if I can find a gently used f/4 version for $500 (I really don't want to spend the $1000 on the lens to get it new). I wish Nikon would finally announce a 70-200/4 S. It would be a great two lens combo with either the 24-70/4 S or the 24-120/4 S (which would mean even less lens swapping when you have some overlap). the more "pro" expensive lenses are pricy and a little big at times, except lenses like the 14-24/2.8 S, which is actually quite compact/ light for what it is.
